Icons written in our workshop are mainly created using the technique of egg tempera. The whole process is very labor-intensive. Firstly, well dried, usually linden wood boards are soaked in animal adhesive and the canvas is applied onto them. Then it is overlaid with chalk base (so-called lewkas). Upon so prepared painting support, layer by layer is being applied mineral paint (pulverized precious stones, clays, pigments). Egg yolk mixed with wine vinegar or wine and water is used as an emulsion. One of the last stages is applying gold leaves on nimbi or the whole background. The last phase is making an inscription (name of the depicted saint or given holiday) and protecting the icon by olipha (a kind of varnish). The whole process of creating an icon, from the moment of soaking the board to varnishing, takes approximately one month.
